New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants New Yorkers to paint their rooftops white. Reflective Roof Coatings can make buildings cooler and more energy efficient.

According to Bloomberg, the benefits reflective roof coatings are well known. It can reduce temperatures by as much as 60 degrees on the roofs, and by 10 to 20 degrees inside, cutting energy bills and reducing carbon emissions.

“It is quite amazing—the payback on these kinds of investments really are very quick and make an enormous difference,” the mayor said.

Arthur Rosenfeld, a member of the California Energy Commission, documented the effectiveness of reflective roofs in a study 15 years ago. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu recently encouraged Americans to embrace the practice.

    I live in Palm Springs and just installed a cool roof system on my flat roof. My air conditioning usually kicks on at 10am to keep the temperature at 73 but the day after i installed it didn’t kick on until 2pm!! i’ve already made up the money i spent in energy savings during the first month.
